Imagine coming home one day to find a bill for plumbing you already paid for. The bill is far more than the original cost, but you have to pay it or be forced to replace it all. Good luck in the interim. This is what we are hearing from customers about VMware’s latest pricing overhaul under Broadcom’s regime.
Their move from perpetual to subscription-based software licensing is just that: a dramatic cost escalation on an essential utility with zero added value. VMware is plumbing - it doesn’t directly render business value, and doesn’t have standing to increase already excessive prices, assuming customers have no choice but to pay.
Outrage from the tech community, of which there's plenty, has fallen on deaf ears; it appears Broadcom is more than willing to accept their role as tyrannical overlord. Imagine Broadcom as a Star Wars character: Darth Profitus, mercilessly slashing through customer budgets with their golden lightsaber, storming through IT hallways and shouting "This slice of your budget belongs to me now! I have altered the deal, pray I don't alter it further!" Each swing cuts deeper into the financial reserves of businesses, leaving a trail of frustrated IT managers in its wake. Don’t wait for them to alter it further.
For those wondering what they can do about it, know that cost-effective and equally viable alternatives exist. Open-source solutions and different cloud providers deliver flexibility without the golden handcuffs. When shopping around and comparing your options, it's important to avoid building dependencies on commercial software providers at deep layers of your stack. Don't put yourself in a difficult position with vendors controlling your costs and determining your technology roadmaps.
VMware and Broadcom might think they’ve struck gold, but customers have choices, especially with a seasoned partner to lead the way. Don't let profiteering providers seize your budget. It's time to break free.
It is time to…
